Babies are born with a natural curiosity, so it’s not surprising that they love to sit up to observe the world around them, even before they are able to sit up on their own. So baby floor seats, which prop them up to a sitting position before they can manage it alone, are a delight for infants. These lightweight seats are also a safe place for you to put your baby down, as well as lightweight and easy to move around the house.

We started our search for the best baby floor seats on BabyCenter’s Community, where we checked out parent recommendations that were then researched and vetted by our experienced editors. Read on to learn the best baby floor seat with a tray, the best baby activity floor seat, and more. This versatile baby floor seat can hold your baby in three different sitting positions, making the transition from a baby-friendly semi-recline to two increasingly upright options that work for most babies right up through 12 months. The Learn-to-Sit comes with a removable snack tray and linkable toys, and the fabric seat is machine-washable for deep cleaning after major messes.

Heads up

Some parents don’t like that the seat cushion is not very thick.

Best baby floor seat with a tray

Fisher-Price Sit-Me-Up Floor Seat with Tray

Parents like that the tray on Fisher-Price’s Sit-Me-Up is big and has a lip all around the edge; you can put a decently-sized snack or toy on it and be sure it’ll stay put long enough for your baby to eat or play. The tray is dishwasher-safe, the fabric pads are machine-washable, and the seat folds down for storage or travel.

Heads up

Parents have reported that the leg area can feel a bit tight for a baby with chunky legs.

Parents say

“Just bought one yesterday. He really likes it. He likes to sit up and watch what's going on in the house vs. staring at the ceiling when I lay him in his playmat.”

“I just got one and my LO loves it. Smiled as soon as he was in it. He's able to sit up comfortably and see what's going on around him. He seems more entertained. Also he actually is trying to play with toys which he won't do laying down.”

Specs

  • 14.25 x 7.5 x 16 inches
  • 1 pound

Best baby activity floor seat

Skip Hop Silver Lining Cloud 2-in-1 Activity Floor Seat

It’s good looking, with a sleek design and wide legs that give it stability, and the toys are cool: spinners with colored beads whirling mesmerizingly inside, a fidget toy with beads to move around, and, depending on which version you get, either a bee that makes a clacking noise or a rattle shaped like a smiling star. The snack tray is nice and big, too.

Heads up

There are some parents who found it hard to maneuver the baby in and out of this seat.

It’s also small and sleek and won’t take up a lot of space on the floor or pull focus from your decor. Parents like the three-point harness that keeps babies securely in the seat, and the molded sitting space that helps even floppy babies sit up.

Heads up

It can be a tight squeeze for babies with chubby legs.

Parents say

“My DS is currently using the Bumbo for 3-month-old babies and it’s great. My little dude is a big guy and I plan on trying the 6 month one this weekend as it’s the deluxe one with the feeding tray etc.”

“I like the Bumbo because it's firm to help them learn to sit up and you can purchase a tray for when they start snacking.”

Best floor seat booster for feeding

Ingenuity Baby Base 2-In-1 Seat

Amazon

The ingenuity Baby Base begins as a baby floor seat and eventually converts into a booster seat for kids as old as 4 years old, so it’ll be with you for the long haul. It’s simple design is safe, securing more wobbly babies with the added harness system. The plastic parts and foam insert wipe clean and the tray, which stores neatly underneath the booster seat, is dishwasher-safe.

Heads up

The back strap that attaches to the back of the chair is not adjustable.

Parents say

“We love our Ingenuity seat. It has straps to attach it to a chair as they get older, and the tray stores underneath. We have had two different 6-year-olds sit in it and a friend’s 2.5-year-old has used it a few times. So it should last for a while.”

There are two fabric loops that hold toys for your baby to play with, and the leg openings are spacious and accommodate bigger legs.

Heads up

Some parents say that small or slender babies don’t fit as well in the Hugaboo, and tend to list to one side.

Parents say

“We have a Hugaboo seat for learning to sit independently, it's soft and thick so it's pretty sturdy despite him being a squiggle worm.”

“We bought this Hugaboo and it’s helped out a lot. Of course, tummy time is still essential but this gives my baby girl the support she needs.”

Best tummy time support seat

Infantino Prop-A-Pillar Tummy Time & Seated Support

Amazon

These adorable and smartly designed pillows stack or detach from each other, which gives the Prop-a-Pillar dual abilities: it’s a tummy time prop for your baby’s earliest days, then, once she’s built up the muscles she needs to hold herself up with support, the caterpillar pillow fastens on top to make a curved support. Parents call this seat a lifesaver, and say it worked for their baby even when other seats set off crying jags.

Heads up

Some parents say that babies who love kicking can kick the Velcro fasteners apart, toppling the pillow stack.

Parents say

“I love the Infantino Prop-A-Pillar; you can unfold it to do tummy time and it seriously will come in handy for months. I started using it at about 5-6 weeks old.”

Finally, the chair transforms into a booster seat that straps onto a kitchen chair and holds your baby until she’s 33 pounds (the size of an average 3-year-old).

Parents say

“We have a Summer SuperSeat and it entertains LO long enough to pack a box or two (we’re moving soon).”

The detachable toy tray is exceptionally fun, with spinners, textured fabric gewgaws, and a light-up piano that plays songs and sounds for your baby. Its fabric parts are machine-washable, and the rest of the seat is wipe-clean and sleek, with fewer crumb-hiding crannies than competitors.

Heads up

Some parents warn that the seat’s fabric toys can bend over time.

What is a baby floor seat?

Before your baby can sit upright unassisted, floor seats help prop her up to give her a different vantage point, and gives you a safe place to set your baby down for a few hands-free minutes. Babies can begin to use floor seats as soon as they have good control of their head and neck, which happens around 3 to 5 months.

When you are shopping around for a baby floor seat, consider:

  • Safety: Choose a seat that keeps your baby safe and secure. Key features are a harness to keep your baby in place, and padded parts instead of hard plastic that can hurt her.
  • Comfort: Most babies prefer sitting on fabric or soft foam over hard plastic.
  • Longevity: Will this seat grow with your baby? How?
  • Care: A good floor seat should be easy to wipe down or should have machine-washable fabric parts.
  • Entertainment: Loops or hooks to hold toys are always appreciated, particularly when you can move them around and rotate them out to keep your baby interested.

Are baby floor seats safe?

If you choose to use a baby floor seat, follow these guidelines:

  • These seats should be used, as directed by their name, on the floor. Placing these seats on countertops, beds or on couches poses a safety hazard for your baby, where they are at risk to fall. Note that some seats strap onto chairs and become a booster seat; using the seat this way is safe if recommended by the seat’s manufacturer.
  • Never leave your baby unattended in a floor seat.
  • Check your seat’s manual carefully to make sure your baby falls within the guidelines for age, developmental stage, and weight. Do not begin using before the age manufacturer recommends, and discontinue usage at the age, stage, or weight recommended by your seat’s manual.
  • Baby floor seats should be used in short stints of time, typically no more than 15 minutes at a time. The positioning of a floor seat can be a bit restrictive. Spending too much time with limited movement hinders vital muscle development for your babies.
