Is acrylic plastic bendable? ›

You can bend both cast acrylic sheet and extruded acrylic (the budget version). With a little experience and careful preparation, you'll achieve great results! Not just professionals but also handy DIYers can get started with bending acrylic using a paint burner, a heat spiral or a convection oven.

Acrylic is typically a more rigid plastic, whereas polycarbonate can be purchased in various flexible grades. Nevertheless, both plastics can be bent under heat if needed. Polycarbonate, too, is slightly more durable than acrylic and less likely to crack under stress.

Acrylic can also be bent without any, so cold bending. This is possible up to a radius of 320 times the material thickness. An acrylic sheet of 5 mm can, therefore, be bent to a radius of 5 x 320 = 1600 mm. Polycarbonate can be bent up to 100x the material thickness.

Polypropylene (PP)

Its widespread use and popularity are undoubted because polypropylene is one of the most flexible thermoplastics on the planet. Although PP is stronger than PE, it still retains flexibility. It will not crack under repeated stress.

As it becomes warm it softens and can be bent or formed into any shape imaginable. The typical forming temperature range of most acrylic sheet plastics is 275°F to 350°F (135°C to 177°C). A consistent and controlled heat source is necessary so that the bends are smooth and the finished parts are aesthetically pleasing.

As mentioned earlier, acrylic also suffers from scratches more so than glass. The nature of the finish will show up scratches more easily. It will also pick up dirt and grease quite easily too, however, this is offset by the fact that it is easier to clean than glass overall.
