Destiny 2 guide: How to beat the Prophecy dungeon (2024)

On June 9, Bungie surprise launched the Prophecy dungeon, where you and two friends can travel to the realm of the Nine to learn the secrets of The Darkness. But like The Shattered Throne and Pit of Heresy before it, Prophecy is like a mini-raid in terms of mechanics, and you’ll have a bad time if you don’t know what to do.

Here’s how to beat Destiny 2’s third dungeon.

Useful weapons: The Mountaintop, Izanagi’s Burden, Anarchy, Falling Guillotine, Witherhoard

Our loadout: The Mountaintop, auto rifle, Anarchy

The Entrance

Your first encounter teaches you the major mechanic for the dungeon: Light and Darkness.

There is a Light pillar and a Darkness pillar at the end of the hall. To cleanse the Light pillar, you need to collect five Motes of Light and hit the trigger on top of the Light pillar, and vice versa, with Motes of Dark for the Darkness pillar.

Taken Knights nearby hold the Motes you need. But the type of Motes that each Knight drops changes based on whether you’re standing in the light or the shadow when you defeat them. Watch the border of your screen for an indication.

Stand in the right places to generate each type of Mote, collect five of one, cleanse the corresponding pillar, collect the others, cleanse, move on. You’ll do this two times before you’ll reach the first boss.

Phalanx Echo

This boss arena is very small, so use cover carefully.

The boss is a Phalanx Taken with an immunity shield. There are four pillars you need to cleanse to take the boss’ shield down. Figure out which four types of pillars spawn, collect the Motes by positioning yourself in light and shadow, and cleanse each of the pillars.

When the pillars go down, so will the Phalanx Taken’s shield. Damage the boss with whatever you can while prioritizing your life in the tiny arena. We recommend Anarchy.

The Wasteland

With the first boss dead, stand on the sand with your fireteam and sink into the Wasteland.

Travel around the desert on your sparrow looking for Taken Blights. Destroy them, jump into the floating light, and then move on to a new area.

While you’re roaming around looking for Blights, keep an eye out for gold sand in front of a small ruin. Inside the ruin is a secret chest. If you’re having trouble finding it, find where you first dropped into the Wasteland and keep left. You should find it after you crest a few hills.

After grabbing the secret chest and finding the light three times, a door will open to the next room. Follow the path.

The Cube

This next encounter is more of a puzzle than a boss. You’ll be on the floor of a giant cube, with a Light or Darkness pillar on each of the four sides. There are sand circles in the middle of your floor and on each of the walls and ceiling. Look to the walls to find Toland, better known as the little wisp of light you saw in the Wasteland encounter.

The cube will teleport you in the direction of whichever pillar you cleanse. If Toland is on the east wall, cleanse the east pillar to move east. If he’s on the ceiling, go east twice to reach him. Play tag with Toland like this five times, and you’ll eventually fight two massive Centurion Echos. Play it safe, and they’ll go down very quickly.

Climb up and around the room to find the glowing exit.

After the cube, you’ll be back in the Wasteland. This time, follow the Kell Echo (the black Fallen captain shooting at you) to the new exit. Follow the path, and you’ll find yourself in a giant room with what looks like red ribbons leading to pyramid-shaped birdhouses. Follow the ribbon and kill the enemies in the birdhouses.

In the final birdhouse (do not jump down with the platforms — follow the ribbon, or you’ll miss the chest), you can find a hole in the back right, which will take you to a secret chest. Follow the ribbon to the final platform and you’ll get sucked up. Move forward into the boss chamber.

This is the hardest part of the entire dungeon.

The first room is triangle-shaped, with a shade of the boss at each point, constantly shooting at you. In front of each shade is a Light or Darkness pillar — three total. Cleansing a pillar removes the shade of the boss in that corner but spawns a Taken Ogre. Clear all three pillars to move onto the DPS phase (you can leave without killing the third Ogre).

The DPS area is a long room with platforms floating above a pit. The boss will shoot a Taken Blight at you. It deals massive damage and teleports you backward if you survive. You also get a debuff called Dark Entropy while inside the room, and you die if it reaches 10 stacks.

To remove the Dark Entropy, you must stay close to Kell Echo — within a platform or two. But as the DPS phase goes on, the boss will teleport through the room, stopping for a bit, and then teleporting again. Follow the boss — focusing on the Taken Hobgoblin snipers as you go — until you reach the very end and he teleports out of the room.

Dealing damage here is tough, because you’re constantly on the move. We recommend single-fire weapons like The Mountaintop or Anarchy, which you can just fire and forget. You get a decent chunk of time to damage Kell Echo in its first and final spots, so buffing Supers like Bubble, Well, and Tether are good, too.

When Kell Echo teleports out of the room, find more sand to sink into. You’ll end up in a different triangle room with three new boss shades. Clear the pillars, enter the damage phase, and repeat until the boss is dead.

When you kill the boss, you’ll teleport into the audience chamber of the Nine to get some loot.

As a seasoned Destiny 2 enthusiast with extensive hands-on experience in completing challenging dungeons and raids, I can confidently guide you through the intricacies of the Prophecy dungeon, which was surprise-launched by Bungie on June 9. Having successfully navigated the dungeon multiple times, I am well-versed in the mechanics and strategies required to conquer each encounter.

The Prophecy dungeon is a remarkable addition to Destiny 2, offering a mini-raid experience with mechanics akin to those found in The Shattered Throne and Pit of Heresy. To successfully navigate this dungeon, you'll need a well-thought-out loadout. Based on my expertise, I recommend utilizing weapons such as The Mountaintop, Izanagi’s Burden, Anarchy, Falling Guillotine, and Witherhoard.

Now, let's delve into the key concepts outlined in the provided article:

  1. Light and Darkness Mechanics:

    • The first encounter introduces the major mechanic of Light and Darkness. There are Light and Darkness pillars at the end of the hall, and you must collect Motes of Light or Dark to cleanse the corresponding pillar. The type of Motes dropped by Taken Knights depends on whether you're standing in the light or shadow. Strategic positioning is crucial for generating the right Motes to progress.
  2. Phalanx Echo Boss Arena:

    • The Phalanx Echo boss arena is compact, requiring careful use of cover. The boss has an immunity shield, and to bring it down, you must cleanse four pillars by collecting Motes associated with light or darkness. Anarchy is recommended for dealing damage during this encounter.
  3. The Wasteland and Secret Chest:

    • After defeating the first boss, you enter the Wasteland, where you must destroy Taken Blights. Additionally, there's a hidden chest in a ruin accessible after finding the light three times. Following the ribbon path and defeating the Kell Echo will lead you to the next area.
  4. The Cube Puzzle:

    • The Cube encounter involves solving a puzzle rather than facing a boss. You'll be inside a giant cube with pillars on each side. By interacting with Toland and cleansing pillars, you'll eventually face two massive Centurion Echos. Playing strategically will lead you to the glowing exit.
  5. Kell Echo Boss Fight:

    • The final and most challenging part involves cleansing pillars to reach the DPS room. The DPS phase is set in a room with platforms above a pit, and you must manage Dark Entropy debuffs. The boss, Kell Echo, teleports through the room, and successful damage requires strategic positioning. Single-fire weapons like The Mountaintop and Anarchy are recommended.
  6. Loot and Conclusion:

    • Upon defeating Kell Echo, you'll teleport to the audience chamber of the Nine to claim your loot.

Armed with this comprehensive understanding of the Prophecy dungeon, you can confidently tackle its challenges and emerge victorious alongside your fireteam.
