How Basketball Overhang Determines Your Installation Location (2024)

Deciding where to place your basketball hoop and how big of one you need can be a difficult decision. But with help from us, it doesn’t have to be. We have provided three different charts below that will assist you in determining where your Goalrilla, Goaliath, or Silverback hoop can be easily installed.

One major factor that will determine the location your basketball hoop should be installed, and which hoop you’d like to own is overhang. In the midst of the excitement of purchasing a basketball goal, the overhang is something the customer sometimes do not think about.

Overhang is the distance from the front face of the pole to the front face of the backboard. Typically, the deeper the overhang, the better, as the post is pushed back and removed from the playing area. The shorter the overhang, the more likely players are to run into the post during play. Overhang allows for play underneath the basket without hitting the pole and is an important safety feature.Paired with a thick pole pad, overhang protects players from impacting the pole during aggressive play. The heavy-duty steel post doesn’t care if you’re the next Michael Jordan or a parent showing off to your kids, a pole pad is always a good idea!

Our Goalrilla, Goaliath, and Silverback in-ground hoops feature anchor bolt mounting systems, which ensure easy, and accurate leveling at installation. It is important to be confident with your placement before beginning the installation process since the hoops are set in concrete using rebar steel rods. Placement of your anchor is a decision that is literally “set in concrete”. When considering where to install your basketball hoopanchor kit, first decide which model of Goalrilla, Goaliath, or Silverback goal you will purchase. Then, use the matching overhang chart to select the best position based on your location.

Too much overhang can reduce the amount of court space and cause excessive shaking due to the weight of the backboard being suspended too far from the main pole. Look for approximately 2 feet to 4 feet of overhang for the best balance of safety and performance. A basketball hoop with an overhang of 5 feet or more can compromise performance because the weight of the glass backboard will increase shake in the system. A basketball hoop with an overhang of 5 feet will actually encroach on the play surface by more than 7 feet once you add the 25 inches of rim that come out from the backboard surface.

Overhang changes as the basketball goal is adjusted. Goalrilla basketball hoops are adjustable from the height of 7.5 feet to the NBA and NCAA regulation height of 10 feet. Use the Goalrilla basketball goal overhang chart to find your model and learn the distance in overhang at each height.
