Martha’s Vineyard is a small island located south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Visitors to the island will find many different options for getting here. From ferry rides to plane rides, here is how to get to Martha’s Vineyard.
Arrive by ferry
Travelingby way of sea is the most popular way to get to Martha’s Vineyard. There areboth car ferries and passenger ferries available. If you are traveling by wayof car or bus, you most likely will catch the ferry from Woods Hole, in thetown of Falmouth on Cape Cod. Other ferries do run from Hyannis, New Bedford,Rhode Island, Nantucket, and Falmouth Inner Harbor.
Car ferries
The SteamshipAuthority in Woods Hole runs about 20 trips a day during the summer season.It accommodates cars in addition to passengers and is the favorite choice forthose wanting to take their car on the island. When you make your reservation,specify the make and model of your car as they charge different rates based onthe car’s length.
Passenger ferry
If you are arriving at Martha’s Vineyard without a car, the passenger-only Island Queen at Falmouth Inner Harbor makes a 35-minute trip to Oak Bluffs. No reservations are needed. The ferry runs late May to mid-October.
The Falmouth-Edgartown Ferry service runs a one-hour passenger ferry, the Pied Piper, from Falmouth Inner Harbor to Edgartown. Reservations are required. The ferry runs from late May to mid-October.
The Hy-lineferry from Hyannis, MA runs daily from Ocean Street Dock to Oak Bluffs.This ferry runs late May through mid-October, as well.
ThePatriot Party Boat runs from Falmouth to Oak Bluffs with daily services year-round.No reservations are required. Parking during the summer is available at anoff-site location, so be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes before departure.
If you are coming from New York City and New Jersey there is a high-speed catamaran that runs from late May to mid-October via Seastreak Martha’s Vineyard. The catamarans leave Thursdays and Fridays from New York and take 6.5 hours from New York to Oak Bluffs. The return trips are available Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays.
For all passenger ferries, there is a trip fee, usually best to buy a round-trip ticket, plus a parking fee with overnight fees costing more.
By air
If you would rather travel by way of air rather than sea, fly into Martha’s Vineyard Airport, located about five miles outside of Edgartown. The Cape Air/Nantucket Airlines provides the island with year-round trips from Boston, Hyannis, Nantucket, Providence, RI, and New Bedford, MA.
