Number of players and positions / formations.

In netball each team are allowed 7 players on court. There are 7 different positions in netball these are:

  1. Goal keeper there job is to try guard the goal and prevent the goal shooter from scoring.
  2. Goal defense there job is similar to the goal keeper they defend the goal, try to prevent the goal attack from scoring.
  3. Wing defense there job is to prevent the ball from going to the oppositions goal circle.
  4. Center there job is to help defend and attack and try get the ball to the goal attack or goal shooter so that they can score.
  5. Wing attack is to pass to the goal shooter so that they can shoot.
  6. Goal attack there main job is to score.
  7. Goal shooter there main job is to score.

Scoring system

There are many different ways to shoot to win a game. These are:

  • Stationary technique this is when the athlete will shoot the ball without stepping forward they will only bend their knees and try aim for the net.

  • Stepping forward this is when the athlete will step forward and bend their knees before shooting.

  • Stepping back this is when the athlete will step back bend their knees and shoot.

  • Cut back this is when an athlete run towards the player with the ball and runs back and catches the ball and shoots.

  • Holding space this is when the athlete waits for one of their team members to pass the ball (overhead pass) then catches it and shoots.

Duration of a game, and how a game is started.

The game starts by doing a coin toss between the two teams which ever team wins starts. The center will start in the middle of the circle and pass to one of their team mates. The game lasts and hour each quarter lasts 15 minutes there are four quarters.

Playing regulations

  1. Players have to be 3 feet away when defending.
  2. Player are not allowed to snatch or hit the ball from other players.
  3. Players are not allowed to move into the areas that they are not supposed to be in
  4. Players are not allowed to move with the ball.
  5. There are only allowed 7 people on court.

The different types of fouls within the game, and the sanctions for foul play.

The two most important fouls in netball are:

  1. Offside foul – this is when a player goes into an area where the position is not allowed to be.
  2. Obstruction – this is when a player is less than a meter away from the player that they are defending.

Netball is played in an inside court the court size is 30.50m long and 15.25 wide.

To play netball the equipment that is used is a netball post and a netball.

The officials and their roles.

The roles of the officials are :

  1. To make sure that all players are wearing the correct kit and don’t have jewellery while playing.
  2. To make sure that the right size ball is used before playing a match.
  3. Make sure that there are people keeping time of how long the quarters are.
  4. To officiate the game fairly.
  5. Have knowledge about the game.

There are three different officials in netball:

  1. Umpires – they make sure that the rules and regulations are applied throughout the game and call the fouls and make sure the sanctions are applied.
  2. Time keepers – they make sure that they inform the referees when the quarter starts and ends.
  3. Scorers- they make sure that they write down the scores and show the scores.

Unwritten rules and etiquette.

The unwritten rules and etiquette of the game is when a player is injured even one claps for the player to make them feel better its also a form of gratitude. Another unwritten rule is that the winning team does three cheers at the end for the losing team and make sure that the end of the game all the athletes shake hands with the other teams and the referees.

Applying rules and regulations

The officials apply the rules and regulations by making sure that they are also following the rules an example of this is that the official wears correct uniform and equipment. The officials apply the rules and regulations by stopping the game if there are any fouls committed and making sure that before the game players do not have jewellery, hair is tied up and the correct uniform is worn.

Scenarios

Scenarios 1 – team A and team B are playing the Centre from team A is the attacking team and is trying to pass the ball to the goal shooter to shoot however the centre can’t pass because the player is being marked and all the goal attack and the wing attack are not open to revive the pass so the centre passes the ball to the wing defence however the wing defence is in the centre third.

Decision – the referee blows the whistle and signals that that it was an offside over a third so the referee gives the ball to the other team so that they pass the ball which will be to the closets sideline.

Scenario 2 – An attacking player jumps and catches the ball the player lands on their right foot. the player is looking for an open player to pass but has to move in order to pass the they pivot but with their left foot.

Decision – the referee will blow the whistle and it would be a turnover to the closets sideline.

Scenario 3 – the centre from team B intercepts the ball and catches it and lands on both feet the player is looking for an open team mate however they’ve held the ball over 5 seconds.

Decision – the referee will blow the whistle and signal that the ball was held over 3 seconds then turn over the ball to the other team to the closets sideline.
