Every unit in the Marine Corps prides itself in the motto that exemplifies who they are. Every unit also believes that their motto is more badass compared to the others. So from “Balls of the Corps” To “Make peace or die,” here are the 7 most badass Marine Corps unit mottos.

1. Balls Of The Corps
3rd Battalion, 1st Marines
The 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines infantry battalion stationed at Camp Pendleton, California is also known as “The Thundering Third.” In 1978, Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was the company commander of the unit.
2. Retreat Hell
2nd Battalion, 5th Marines
The 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines based in Camp Pendleton boasts of its combat record that stretches back to the First World War. It is also the most decorated battalion unit in the history of the Marine Corps. The “Retreat Hell” motto of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines came from the Battle of Belleau Wood in the First World War when Captain Lloyd Williams replied to the French officer who told them to retreat from the defensive line: “Retreat? Hell, we just got here!”
3. Make peace or die

In every military conflict that the United States of America has been involved with, The 5th Marines was always there ever since its formation more than a hundred years ago.

3rd Battalion, 11th Marines
While the official motto of the 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines is “Semper Flexibilis,” the unit’s artillery insignia also bears the phrase: “God fights on the side with the best artillery. God fights with Third Battalion.”
5. 1/6 HARD
1st Battalion, 6th Marines
The 1st Battalion, 6th Marines is based in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. This unit has a long military history which dates back as far as the First World War in the Battle of Belleau Wood. The 1st Battalion, 6th Marines also fought at Guadalcanal and Tarawa during World War II and they are also an integral part in the Global War on Terror.
6. Mors Ex Tenebris: Death From Darkness
Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 242 or VMFA(AW-242)
The Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 242 or VMFA(AW-242) stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan is also known as “The Bats.” The units’ motto, “death from darkness” was born when the unit fielded the F/A-18D Hornets that specializes in night attacks.
7. Always faithful, always forward
Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command
The Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command gave the moniker “Marine Raider” to all its subordinate combat units. This is to give respect and also commemorates the legendary Marine Raiders of the Second World War.

I was in 3/1 from jan 1978- oct 1978 before i went overseas, i was with lima co, 3rd plt, i don’t remember gen dunford, not saying anything bad or doupting him, just that i would like to know what unit he was with, i have been diagnosed with severe ptsd, and seem to forget alot of my time in the corps, which i would do all over again, SEMPER FI!
