What is flipping your laundry?

So, what is flipping your laundry?

Flipping laundry refers to the act of taking the dry laundry from the tumble dryer and putting it in the laundry basket and transferring the wet laundry from the washing machine to the tumble dryer. That’s what you call a ‘flip’!

Flipping also refers to the act of turning your clothes inside out before washing them. This is a smart practice because doing so can:

  • help prevent the colours of your garments from fading.
  • effectively remove dirt and grime from inside your clothes.
  • protect decorative elements on your clothes (such as buttons, ribbons, sequins and rhinestones).
  • reduce friction during the wash, which can damage the fabric of your clothes (e.g. your jumper could end up with bobbles or fuzziness after a wash.)

Can you leave your clothes in the washing machine overnight?

No, we advise against leaving your freshly washed clothes in the washing machine overnight. Allowing your wet clothes to sit for hours can encourage the growth of mould and harmful bacteria, which loves a damp, humid environment. This would mean you would have to wash your clothes all over again, which defeats the whole objective.

As soon as your clothes are washed, take them out of the washing machine and start the drying process.

You can dry your wet clothes:

  • outdoors on a washing line.
  • on a drying rack in a well-ventilated spot indoors.
  • in a tumble dryer.

Before you dry your clothes on a drying rack or in a tumble dryer, make sure your clothes aren’t dripping wet.

Do and Don’ts of Laundry

Do you need guidance with doing your laundry? Perhaps you have moved out and now it is your first time ever being responsible for doing laundry?

Well, you have come to the right place.

Below, we have created a useful guide, filled with some of our best tips on how to do your laundry successfully.

Dos

  • Always separate your laundry into lights, darks, whites, and delicates.
  • Wash your clothes inside out to prevent the colours from fading and to protect against damage to any decorative elements such as buttons and sequins.
  • Empty out the contents of all the pockets in your clothing, before washing them.
  • Always check the care label of your garments, to see what the cleaning instructions are. For instance, some clothes may say ‘dry clean only’ or ‘cold wash only’ and so on.

  • Put smaller items in a mesh bag before washing, to avoid losing or damaging them.
  • Use a mild, unscented laundry detergent which is free from harsh chemicals.
  • Select the correct water temperature when washing clothes.
  • To prevent shrinkage (e.g. in denim and woolen outfits), wash them in cold or lukewarm water, as opposed to very hot water.
  • If you have the time, pre-treat any stains on your clothing before washing them.
  • Wash new clothes before you wear them for the first time (this is especially important for baby clothes.)
  • Give your clothing a shake before you air dry them.
  • When air drying clothes on a rack, you can turn on a fan, to speed up the drying process.

Don’ts

  • Never use chlorine bleach to clean coloured clothes. It is commonly used to brighten white clothing.
  • When washing trousers, don’t leave the zippers open as these can snag and tear your other garments easily.
  • Don’t use a higher heat setting on your washing machine than is recommended for your garments.
  • Don’t use too much laundry detergent. Overdoing it will leave white residue all over your clothing, which can ruin your outfits.
  • If you are washing soiled clothing or bed linens, then don’t handle these without wearing disposable gloves and an apron, as this is the best way to avoid cross-contamination.
  • Don’t dry your wet clothes on a radiator, and don’t put away garments that are still wet. The damp environment can encourage the growth of mould and mildew, which can trigger flare-ups of allergy symptoms and asthma.
  • Don’t leave wet clothes inside the washing machine overnight.
  • Don’t just let your clean, dry clothes sit inside the laundry basket, as this will cause wrinkles and creases. Fold, hang, or put away your garments as soon as they are fully dry.

How can I get stains out of ‘dry clean only’ items?

We all have those garments in our wardrobe (or household furnishings) where the care label says, ‘dry clean only’.

But what if you don’t have the time to get this item dry cleaned, but the care label says, ‘dry clean only’?

Well, here are our handy tips to remove stains from your ‘dry clean only’ items, without actually dry cleaning them:

  • Always scrape off any excess blobs on a stain, using a butter knife.
  • Grab a clean cloth and dip it in cold water. Blot the stain gently.
  • If water is not enough to lift the stain, then make a cleaning solution of equal parts white vinegar and washing up liquid. Dab a clean cloth in this cleaning solution and then blot it gently on the stain.
  • If the stain on your garment is greasy or oily, then sprinkle a small amount of bicarbonate of soda or cornstarch on the stain. Use a clean cloth or clean toothbrush to work the powder into the stain. Wait a few minutes- this should hopefully absorb the stain.
