He had tough players playing alongside him, so other teams would get beat up if they tried to hurt Gretzky. Also, I believe that there's a certain level of respect. When you're playing against the best player that's ever played you definetly respect him. I would hate to be the guy known for ending his career.

Playing with boys helps, but it is a personal decision
In conclusion, playing on a boy's team during key developmental minor hockey years appears to provide all the right ingredients for girls to reach their full potential as a hockey player.
For those unfamiliar with the rules for the women's game, while body contact is allowed and happens quite regularly, bodychecking is not. Delivering a bodycheck constitutes a two-minute minor penalty. If you really want to know my personal opinion, I have never thought that hitting was necessary in the women's game.
Presently over 20 of the 30 NHL franchises now have an Ice Girls program. The Dallas Stars Ice Girls remain one of the elite programs in the league and will continue to serve as positive role models and ambassadors for the Dallas Stars organization for many years to come.
"The Code" of NHL fighters includes this maxim: don't turtle. For those who aren't familiar with the term, turtling is when a player initiates a fight and then covers up like a turtle going into his shell without actually throwing a punch. This move is considered dishonorable.
